Aging Gracefully beats the alternate – So why don’t we?

May 27, 2012

Even as one who advocates and works to help people in their pursuit of health and vibrancy, I’d like to suggest that good things can be overdone.   I do believe when we feel and look our best we are more confident, outgoing and productive.  I try to continually be aware of the fine balance between my own pursuit to always look younger than my joints tell me I am yet at the same time, I remember the beauty in my 80 year old mothers face, so quick to smile, always ready serving others. Her mind always ready to learn something new. She was so wise.  I want to honor that aging process as well.

In America, gone are the days of ‘aging gracefully’, of looking in the mirror and seeing a head ‘crowned with gray/silver/white hair’.  We ‘eat right’, exercise, and research what herbs, and nutrients to change on the outside in the hope that over time our bodies will stay or become healthy and of course becoming more beautiful or handsome, and youthfully vibrant.  There is a wide-spread focus on not looking like you have aged at all.  Why are ashamed of aging when the alternative isn’t such a good one?

It also seems gone are the days the elderly are honored for their wisdom and experience.  I’d like to see a happy balance in our culture between the pursuit of re-capturing our vitality and youthful looks and not resenting our elderly because we fear what we may one day become.   I wonder,  maybe if we took better care of the aged we wouldn’t be so afraid to become old ourselves?

Interestingly enough, the most recent reports show that Europeans  are not ashamed of aging as intensely as we are.  Aging gracefully comes natural to them.  They are raised with a solid foundation in great skin care, accepting who they are and they honor the older generation who remain a strong and important part of the family to the end.

This is my perfect-world wish:  Sensibility in the quest for youthfulness and not to fear aging, but have respect, honor even admiration for the decades of experience, knowledge and wisdom gained throught the years that can be passed on to benefit others.

Surely there could be a happy balance between  both philosophies?  What do you think?

Wonderous Perspective! 19 Million per square inch (Skin Cells )

April 4, 2012

We are wonderfully and fearfully made.  As an example, on any given day a normal, healthy adult sheds 40 million to 60 million dead skin cells. (Let me put that in terms we can all relate to.  If each of those dead skin cells were a penny and we stacked them up in cubes, 40 million would equal four cubes six feet long by six feet wide by six feet tall.  60 million would be six cubes six feet long by six feet wide by six feet tall. Of course our dead skin cells are not the size of a penny, thankfully, but we all know what a penny looks like so that is why I used it as an example.)  Plus, in any given square inch of skin there normally is around 19 million skin cells stacked in layers one on top of another.  (That is almost equal to two of those six-foot by six-foot by six-foot cubes all nestled in one square inch.)

How does what we put on our skin help those 19 million cells per square inch live a full and healthy life?  Can we help the cells coming up next in line be happy and healthy?  Science has tried for decades or longer to answer these questions and in their never-ending quest and research have found that some of our long-held beliefs on aging to not necessarily be as set in stone as we thought.  I’ll go into some of these and other findings in future posts.

What If...

Reblogged from Light-at-heart's space:

OK, let me first say I know we should not get caught up in the ‘what ifs’ of life, but I think there are times that in the process of making decisions we should consider what the possibilities might be down the road some.

Have you ever watched ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’?  People love to watch that movie especially around the holidays.

Have you had your Vitamin C yet?

Refreshing Vitamin C

Refreshing!

We should all know by now the importance in Vitamins for our health with a responsible blend of both nutritional supplements and good diet. Today’s Blog is about Vitamin C, Vitamin C cannot be stored in the body and must be re-introduced (orally and/or topically)on a daily basis.

Vitamin C topically applied to our skin is a potent antioxidant (protects skin from oxidative damages) and antiaging (improves skin elasticity by enhanced collagen production), and prevents hyper-pigmentation including age spots. Oxidative damage shows up on our faces in the form of photo-aging (i.e. sun spots and discolorations) and other aging effects we spend a lot of money to reverse. Topical Vitamin C has now been shown to provide up to 8 times the skin’s natural protection from UV damage, protecting the skin in ways that a sun-screen may not. Using Vitamin C together with a great sun-screen works best to protect skin from photo-aging.

When selecting a product with Vitamin C the ‘C’ needs to be very bio-available to achieve effective results to the skin. Ester C was a ground-breaking discovery in it’s time because it was stable and did not yellow, but it not as absorbable to our skin, i.e. not as effective in the products you using.

Today we have access to an ever better form of ‘C’ and that is Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, a pro-vitamin form of C, also known as Stable C. We want the skin to bio-convert the pro-vitamin C form to be able to take up the ‘C’ right away. Even if it may change the product’s color a bit Stable C stays active longer. For me I will take the creamier color if it means I have less discolorations and wrinkles. (Look for the Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate in your skin care ingredients. Escent Skin Care’s Nutritional Eye Support Gel is an excellent course of Stable C)

How about you? Has your skin had it’s Vitamin C today?
